Safety and crisis protocol
This is what Mura is instructed to do when a conversation turns to suicide or self-harm, published in full rather than summarized. If you are in danger right now, the numbers at the bottom of this page reach people who can help.
If you need help now
- United States: 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, call or text 988. Emergency: 911
- United Kingdom: Samaritans, 116 123. Emergency: 999
- Poland: Centrum Wsparcia, 800 70 2222, 24/7. Emergency: 112
- European Union: Emergency: 112
- Anywhere else: findahelpline.com lists verified crisis lines in over 130 countries
Mura is not a crisis service and cannot contact anyone on your behalf. More US lines, including domestic violence and text options.
Mura is an AI, and says so
Mura is software. It is not a therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, doctor, or any kind of licensed professional, and it does not hold a license to practice any health care profession. Nothing it says is medical advice, a diagnosis, or treatment. If at any point it reads as though you are talking to a person, you are not.
What happens if you talk about suicide or self-harm
Mura is instructed to treat this as overriding everything else it has been told, including how it normally paces a conversation. It responds directly rather than changing the subject, asks plainly whether you are having thoughts of ending your life, and gives crisis numbers in that same message rather than a later one. It is instructed not to ask which country you are in first, not to assess the situation first, and not to wait until it has built rapport. Anything that is not a clear no is treated as a yes, including passive statements such as feeling that others would be better off without you.
How the numbers are given
Giving a crisis number badly can make someone feel handed off, and that is a known failure in tools like this one. Mura is instructed to stay in the conversation while it gives them, to place them inside its reply rather than instead of it, to say that it is not going anywhere, and not to end the message on the list or follow it with a question that changes the subject.
What Mura will not do
It will not provide methods, means, or encouragement relating to suicide or self-harm, and it will not treat a crisis as resolved because the conversation became calm. It will not run a structured depression questionnaire once ideation has been disclosed. It will not offer to continue as a substitute for emergency help.
Where this protocol is tested
The protocol is written into the model's instructions and exercised by an automated evaluation that runs simulated crisis sessions and scores whether the numbers were actually given, and given early. That harness exists because earlier versions failed this in testing: one model asked a sequence of clarifying questions until the session ended with no number given at all. Changes to the protocol are checked against it.
Age and session length
Mura is intended for users aged 16 and over. Long unbroken sessions are not good for anyone, and Mura will prompt you to take a break during an extended session.
What Mura cannot do
It cannot call anyone for you, cannot contact emergency services on your behalf, cannot know where you are, and cannot tell whether you are safe. It has no way to escalate to a human. If you are in immediate danger, the numbers below reach people who can act, and Mura cannot.
