Magnesium, omega-3 and the supplements with real mood evidence
The shelves are noisy, but a handful of supplements have genuine clinical backing for mood and sleep. Here's what the data actually supports.
Most mood supplements are over-promised. A few have real, repeated evidence. Worth knowing which.
Omega-3 (EPA-heavy)
Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly formulations higher in EPA, have shown benefits for depressive symptoms across multiple trials. They're among the better-supported options.
Magnesium
Involved in hundreds of bodily processes, magnesium is commonly low, and supplementation has shown modest benefits for stress, sleep, and mood, especially where intake is inadequate.
Sensible expectations
Supplements are adjuncts, not cures. They tend to help most when they correct a genuine gap. Quality and dose matter, and they can interact with medications.
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before starting any supplement, particularly if you take other medication.
