The 4-7-8 breath: a 90-second reset for acute anxiety

Slow exhales activate the vagus nerve and pull you out of fight-or-flight. A simple, evidence-backed technique you can use anywhere.

When anxiety spikes, your breathing speeds up and shortens. Deliberately lengthening the exhale is one of the fastest ways to signal safety to your body.

The technique

Breathe in through your nose for 4, hold for 7, and exhale slowly through your mouth for 8. Repeat three or four times. The long exhale is the active ingredient: it engages the vagus nerve and slows your heart rate.

Why it works

Extended exhales shift you toward the parasympathetic ("rest and digest") state, easing the physical surge of anxiety within a minute or two.

When to use it

Before a stressful moment, during a wave of panic, or as you settle into bed. It won't fix the underlying worry, but it reliably takes the edge off the body's alarm, which makes everything else easier to handle.
